I have probably entered hundreds of sweepstakes in my days, and nothing seems to motivate me more to keep entering them as when I win something! I can vouch that real people do win these sweepstakes!
My biggest win so far was probably an XBox a few years ago from ReadySetGamer.com I have also won several movie tickets, phonecards, gift certificates, coupons for free products and debit cards (gotta love free cash!). I have won $50 and several other prizes from Blingo.com in the last year and two iPod shuffles from Winzy.com this year so far!
I only enter contests that are free to enter. And most only take a minute or less to enter online. I personally have never won any mail-in sweepstakes, but if the prize is something that interests me, I will gamble the price of a stamp. Rumor has it you are supposed to use non-traditional size colored envelopes to make your entry stand out.
I haven’t won a new car or vacation yet or a cash prize big enough for me to have to claim on my taxes, but there is still hope!
